ENHANCED ACCESS
Northumbria Primary Care offers a fortnightly out-of-hours service that is open from 9.00am – 5.00pm on Saturdays.
If you are calling to book an appointment with the enhanced access service or have an enquiry about this service, please call the practice on the usual phone number during our regular hours. If your call is urgent please call 111, or 999 in an emergency.
Our enhanced access takes place at our Broomhill surgery or at The Rothbury Practice. The location alternates on a fortnightly basis. We will confirm the location with you at the time of booking.
When the GP practice is closed
If you need medical help fast but it’s not an emergency call 111, if it’s a life-threatening emergency call 999.
NHS 111 is the number to call when you need medical help fast but it’s not a life-threatening emergency. Calls to 111 are FREE from landlines and mobiles and is available 24/7, every day of the year.
When to call 111:
- You think you need to go to A&E but it’s not a critical emergency
- Your GP surgery is closed and you need healthcare advice
- You don’t know who to call for medical help
When to call 999:
- Major accident or trauma
- Severe breathlessness
- Severe bleeding
- Loss of consciousness
- Severe chest pain
Minor injuries
Alnwick Infirmary has a minor injuries unit that can treat the following conditions:
- Sprains and strains
- Suspected broken bones
- Cuts, grazes or suspected wound infections
- Minor burns and scalds
- Minor head injuries – where there has been no loss of consciousness or vomiting if you are not taking any blood thinning medications, and there are no residual symptoms i.e. headache, nausea, visual disturbance, dizziness or any other symptoms of concussion.
- Minor eye problems
- Ear and throat infections
- Insect and animal bites
- Nose injuries and suspected broken nose
- Removal of rings, earrings, and studs
- Removal of foreign bodies from eyes, nose or ears
